The food is outstanding, spicy without being overpowering, beautifully presented, varied and abundant. Mary Jane Stevens and Sally Berry (Our first online customer review) The flavor-rich food of Eastern Africa (Kenya, Djibouti, Somalia)—redolent doses of lemon, nutmeg, bay leaf, cilantro, cumin, and coriander—is a good reminder of why spice played such a deep role in the development of the modern world. Dig the lukkuu akhaawi (spice-rubbed chicken) and any of the beef or lamb dishes. Willamette Week I'd never had East African food before, but Horn of Africa's extensive Kenyan, Somalian and Ethiopian menu reminded me of a more familiar ethnic cuisine -- Indian. Light, flaky sambusas, similar to Indian samosas, house a warm combination of chicken, organic lentils and assorted spices; deep-fried bajiya bean patties, while similar to falafel, taste heartier and are perfect for sopping up an addictive sweet white dipping sauce that hinted of tapioca and citrus. The Oregonian Unbelievable! A great hidden gem on MLK. Cheap, delicious, and wonderful staff. Try this place! Brian L. (Yelp reviewer) It was a fantastic dining experience - we got sambusas, one of the lamb
entrees, the vegetable sampler, a mango lassi to cool down the spice,
and some sort of fried donut-esque dessert. Jessica M. (Yelp reviewer) Their food is consistently remarkable. The flavors are
complex and intriguing, they have fresh, seasonal ingredients and the
new clay oven has expanded the offerings in delightful ways. Every time
I go I taste some new, wonderful flavor I've never experienced before.
Fred L. (Yelp reviewer) Horn of Africa has been part of Portland for many years. I have loved visiting there with friends and being in the family atmosphere that the owner/chefs Mohammed and Khadija and their children have created. ... It's a great place for vegans and meat lovers to go, and lots of their food is organic. Mark H (Yelp reviewer) Without a doubt, the Horn of Africa serves the most flavorful, authentic, and freshest African food in the area (and we have certainly tried them all multiple times). The food is prepared with great care and attention to detail. Citysearch reviewer I stumbled across this wonderful little restaurant about two months ago. Kind owners who are always welcoming - they are like neighbors. They are famous for their homemade chai, made fresh to order. The spices and flavors will make your mouth water... This restaurant is like none other... The food is incredibly fresh, good for the mind, body and soul. Citysearch reviewer The cuisine is superbly prepared and presented in a beautiful setting. They advetise on their take-out menu that the food is lovingly prepared, and it most certainly tastes as though it is. Last night we were part of a party of 12 to celebrate a friend's birthday. How delighted we were to find ourselves seated in a beautifully decorated private room as we settled in to the amazing feast that was served to us.
